Unlike the work of other vendors, photographs aren't things you can hear or smell or taste-test! You have to research, view their portfolios, and meet with them to get a feel for their personality to see if they are someone you want to work with and to have capture your special day. Luckily, we've been there and we have a few tricks up our sleeves to help you land a photographer that is fit for your style and personality!
Know your Style
Just like knowing what type of bride you are, knowing your preferred photography style is a must before deciding on who will be capturing your big day. First, ask yourself what style and lightening do you prefer?
A traditional & classic style is all about timelessness and producing posed photographs for a portrait album. The photograph will adjust the background, subject's body and even attire. On the other hand the photojournalism style is about capturing the events as they unfold in order to tell a story of your wedding. This is where you see the photographer fade into the background to get those candid shots.
Next up, the portraiture style requires photographers to excel at precision that is needed for those formal, posed pictures. This style is perfect for couples looking to get a more edgy result as this style incorporates dramatic lightening, angles and gives off a European flavor. Similarly, the high fashion style vamps up the subject and of course her clothes! If you're looking for artsy and glamorous shots, this is the way to go. Lastly, natural light is all about making the photos come off as warm and natural. Great for outdoor weddings!
Of course you could be a mix of any one of these styles and more so it's important to research wedding photos and see what type of style best fits you and your sig other!
Know your Photos
After discovering your photography style, decide what you want to do with your photos. Are you looking to tell a story from beginning to end with no posed shots? Or are you looking for a handful of photos to create an album with? This key step will allow you to create your story (in photos) that you are about to embark on.
Depending on whether you want an artsy magazine feel or are looking to capture those raw moments, research photographers that fit your story. If you think you're a mix of traditional and posed, make sure to discuss that with them to see if they can incorporate both styles! Again, it's all about communicating what you want and what you are looking to get out of the product.
